Keeping the faith when life gets hard

Aug 31
5 min read

There are seasons in life when faith feels easy.

The prayers are being answered. The doors are opening. Our families are doing well. Life seems peaceful, and we can clearly see the goodness of God all around us.

But then there are the other seasons.

The seasons when we pray and nothing seems to change.

When the diagnosis comes.

When relationships are strained.

When money is tight.

When grief shows up unexpectedly.

When we are exhausted from carrying something we never imagined we would have to carry.

Those are the moments when our faith is truly tested.

And sometimes keeping the faith doesn't look like being strong.

Sometimes it simply looks like whispering, "Jesus, I still trust You."

Faith Doesn't Mean We Won't Have Hard Times

Following Jesus was never a promise that we would have a trouble-free life.

Jesus told us plainly:

"In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."— John 16:33

I love that Jesus didn't pretend life would always be easy. He told us there would be trouble.

But He also gave us the reason we can have hope:

He has already overcome the world.

Whatever you are walking through today may have surprised you, but it did not surprise God.

He sees you.

He knows the whole story.

And He is already standing in the tomorrow you're worried about today.

God Is Still With You in the Valley

One of the most comforting passages in Scripture is Psalm 23.

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me."— Psalm 23:4

Notice David didn't say, "If I ever walk through the valley."

He said, "Though I walk through the valley."

Valleys are part of life.

But here's the beautiful part:

We don't walk through them alone.

Sometimes we become so focused on asking God to get us out of the valley that we forget to look for Him in the valley.

He is there.

In the tears.

In the sleepless nights.

In the doctor's waiting room.

In the unanswered questions.

In the moments when you don't know how you're going to keep going.

God is there.

It's Okay If Your Faith Feels Small

There may be days when you don't feel like you have great faith.

That's okay.

Faith isn't about pretending everything is fine.

Faith is choosing to believe God is faithful even when everything around you feels uncertain.

Jesus said:

"If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed..."— Matthew 17:20

A mustard seed is tiny.

Sometimes that's all we have.

A tiny prayer.

A tiny bit of hope.

A tiny whisper that says, "Lord, help me."

And that's enough to bring to Jesus.

Remember What God Has Already Brought You Through

When you're facing something difficult, take a moment and look back.

Think about the prayers God has already answered.

Think about the doors He opened.

Think about the times you thought you would never make it through something — and somehow, by the grace of God, you did.

David did this when he faced Goliath.

Before David ever defeated the giant, he remembered how God had helped him defeat the lion and the bear.

Sometimes remembering yesterday's faithfulness gives us courage for today's battle.

The Bible tells us:

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."— Hebrews 13:8

The God who carried you before is the same God carrying you now.

Don't Let Your Feelings Decide What You Believe

Our feelings are real, but they aren't always reliable.

There may be days when you don't feel like God is close.

There may be moments when you wonder if He hears your prayers.

There may even be times when you ask, "God, where are You?"

But faith reminds us that God's promises are true whether we feel them or not.

"For we walk by faith, not by sight."— 2 Corinthians 5:7

We don't have to understand everything God is doing in order to trust Him.

Sometimes faith simply says:

I don't understand this, Lord, but I know You are good.

Keep Praying

Don't stop talking to God just because you're discouraged.

You don't have to pray beautiful prayers.

You don't need the perfect words.

Tell Him you're tired.

Tell Him you're scared.

Tell Him you're disappointed.

Tell Him you're struggling to understand.

God can handle your honesty.

The Bible says:

"Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."— 1 Peter 5:7

Not some of your cares.

All of them.

Bring the whole mess to Him.

This Season Will Not Last Forever

One of the enemy's favorite lies during difficult seasons is:

"This is how your life will always be."

But seasons change.

The Bible says:

"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."— Psalm 30:5

Your "morning" may not come as quickly as you'd like.

The answer may not look exactly the way you imagined.

But this chapter is not the whole story.

God is still writing.

God Can Use Even This

One of the hardest truths to believe when we're hurting is that God can bring something good from our pain.

Romans gives us this promise:

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."— Romans 8:28

That verse doesn't say everything that happens to us is good.

Some things are heartbreaking.

Some things are unfair.

Some things we would never choose.

But God is so powerful that He can take even the broken pieces and use them for His purposes.

Your pain may someday become the testimony that helps someone else survive theirs.

The thing you thought would destroy you may become the very place where someone sees the faithfulness of God through your life.

Keep Holding On

Friend, if you're walking through a difficult season today, you don't have to have everything figured out.

You don't have to know what next month looks like.

You don't even have to know what tomorrow looks like.

Just keep taking the next step with Jesus.

Pray the next prayer.

Read the next Scripture.

Get through the next day.

And when you don't feel strong enough to hold onto God, remember:

He is holding onto you.

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee."— Isaiah 41:10

Hard seasons can shake many things in our lives, but they don't change who God is.

He is still good.

He is still faithful.

He is still near.

He is still working.

And He is still worthy of our trust.

So if all you can pray today is:

"Jesus, I don't understand what You're doing, but I'm choosing to trust You."

That's faith.

Keep going.

Keep praying.

Keep believing.

God isn't finished with your story yet.

A Prayer for the Hard Days

Heavenly Father,

You know exactly what I am facing today. You see the things I share with others and the burdens I carry quietly. When I am afraid, help me trust You. When I am tired, give me strength. When I don't understand what You are doing, remind me that Your ways are higher than mine. Help me remember Your faithfulness. Keep my eyes focused on You instead of my circumstances. Thank You for walking beside me through every valley. Thank You that I never have to face a difficult season alone. Give me the faith to keep taking one more step, one more day at a time.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
