Stop Comparing Your Life to Everyone Else’s

Have you ever looked at someone else’s life and suddenly started questioning your own?

You see their beautiful home, their happy family, their successful business, their vacations, their friendships, their accomplishments, and before you know it, you’re wondering:

Am I doing enough? Why am I not further along? Why does everything seem easier for them? Did I somehow get life wrong?

My friend, comparison has a sneaky way of making us forget everything God has already done in our own lives.

The truth is, we are usually comparing the behind-the-scenes of our life to the highlight reel of someone else’s.

We don’t know what they’ve walked through. We don’t know what happens when the camera is turned off. We don’t know what prayers they’re still waiting on or what struggles they carry privately. And more importantly, their story isn’t our story.

God never asked you to live someone else’s life.

He asked you to faithfully walk the path He has placed in front of you.

Galatians 6:4 says:

“But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.”

There is so much freedom in that.

You don’t have to keep checking where everyone else is standing.

You don’t have to measure your progress against theirs.

You don’t have to accomplish what they accomplished by the age they accomplished it.

God is working in your life according to His timing, His purpose, and His plan.

Psalm 139:14 reminds us:

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

That means God wasn’t confused when He created you.

Your personality, your gifts, your experiences, your journey and even the things you have survived can all be used by Him.

Maybe your life doesn’t look like you thought it would.

Maybe you’re starting over.

Maybe you’re entering a new season.

Maybe you’re watching other people do things you once dreamed of doing.

Don’t let that make you question whether God has forgotten you.

Proverbs 3:5–6 says:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Notice that it says your paths. Not her path. Not their path. Yours.

There will always be someone with more followers, more money, a prettier house, a bigger business, a different family, more opportunities or what appears to be an easier life.

But none of those things can replace the peace that comes from knowing:

I am where God has me today, and I am going to be faithful with what He has placed in my hands.

One of my favorite reminders comes from John 21. Peter asked Jesus about another disciple, basically wanting to know what was going to happen with him.

Jesus answered:

“What is that to thee? follow thou me.” — John 21:22

What a message for us today. When we start looking sideways at everybody else, Jesus lovingly calls our attention back: Follow Me.

Keep your eyes on Him. Keep building. Keep creating. Keep loving your family.

Keep serving. Keep learning. Keep growing.

Keep becoming the woman God is shaping you to be.

Your life doesn’t need to look like anybody else’s life to be beautiful, meaningful or blessed.

Sometimes the quickest way to lose gratitude for what God has given us is to spend too much time looking at what He gave somebody else.

So today, instead of asking, “Why isn’t my life like hers?”

Try asking:

“Lord, what do You want me to do with the life You’ve given me?”

That question changes everything.

You are not running their race.

You are running yours.

And Hebrews 12:1 reminds us to:

“…run with patience the race that is set before us.”

Your race has been set before you.

So keep going, friend.

You don’t need their timeline.

You don’t need their calling.

You don’t need their life.

You simply need to keep your eyes on Jesus and faithfully walk the beautiful, sometimes messy, uniquely yours journey God has placed before you.

There is peace when we stop comparing and start trusting. ❤️
